In 1975, Manuel Morais was one of the first in New England to start planting grapes. Morais was born and raised in Azores, Portugal and one of his fondest memories as a child was going to the vineyard with his father. By the age of 13 he began grafting for his father and soon the older viticulturists in town began to notice his talent. Two or three years later, it seemed everyone wanted Morais to graft for them and, before long, he was grafting for his entire town. Later, upon moving to New England, he met his now partner, Pedro Texeira. Also having spent most of his childhood in Azores, Portugal, Texeira later moved to California where he began to enjoy learning about grapes. The two visited many vineyards and wineries and decided to grow Vitis Vinifera grapes. Running Brook was officially founded in 1998 from a vision to produce top quality wines that would make New Englanders proud and to satisfy their palates.
